Festival Age Against the Machine - Évora

The Intergenerational Community Theatre Festival ‘Age Against The Machine’ takes place in the city of Évora on 12, 13 and 14 June 2025, promoted by the University of Évora (CHAIA-IN2PAST) and the Municipality of Évora, with the collaboration of Artéria Lab and the Department of Performing Arts – School of Arts (UÉvora), and the Department of Visual Arts and Design – School of Arts (UÉvora). This International Festival is part of the international European Tour through five cities (Holstebro, Cuneo, Évora, Goleinow and Novi Sad) of the partners’ performances in the European project Age Against The Machine, European Solidarity Network for the Rights of Older Citizens (ID.101138625), CERV-Network of Towns. The Festival's activities include morning workshops, intercultural meetings and theatre performances that aim to promote intergenerational debate and discussion at an international level to improve the quality of life of elderly citizens, through the visualisation of discriminatory practices, the sharing of good practices relating to their rights and raising awareness of the existence of age-related prejudices.
The Festival programme features five theatre productions by European theatre companies, including Trupa Drž ne daj (Serbia), Teatr Brama (Poland), Nordisk Teaterlaboratorium Odin Teatret (Denmark), DispariTeatro (Italy) and the Department of Performing Arts at the School of Arts of the University of Évora. All the shows have developed participatory creative processes in the performing arts, involving residents, non-professional and professional actors, and elderly citizens and young adults. All the shows address different topics related to existing discriminatory practices, aiming to create debate about the rights of elderly citizens in various areas of their social, political and cultural life. The dramaturgical work of all the shows includes interactive engagement with the audience and a debate of about 20/25 minutes with the audience after each show.
The Festival has a national advisory council from the Algarve, Alentejo, Lisbon, Covilhã, Braga and Porto, in the areas of culture and community, education, community participation, health and social action, involved in the commitment to improve the life of the elderly. The board will actively participate in the debates and interactive parts of the shows.
